Scholarships for HPAE Members and Their Dependents

HPAE is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a national union with over 1 million members. In addition, HPAE participates in many central labor councils throughout New Jersey and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both the AFT and the central labor councils offer scholarship to HPAE and other union members. For information on these scholarships, click on one of the links below:

 

Union Plus Scholarship Program

The Union Plus Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Union Plus Education Foundation, is open to students attending or planning to attend a four-year college or university, a community college or a technical college or trade school.

AFT – Robert G. Porter Scholars Program

This program offers four 4-year, $8,000 post-secondary scholarships to students who are dependents of AFT members, as well as 10 one-time $1,000 grants to AFT members to assist with their continuing education. Deadline is April 1, 2013.

Bergen County Central and Trades Council – Abe Solomon and Ed Purtill Community Service Scholarships

The Bergen County Central and Trades Council sponsors Abe Solomon and Ed Purtill Community Service scholarships in the amount of $1000 for a member of a union affiliated with the Council or a dependent of a member. Eligibility requirements for each scholarship are provided with the applications

Mercer County Labor Council – George L. Pelleteri and Frank Thompson, Jr. Scholarships

The Mercer County Labor Council sponsors college scholarship for children of members of unions affiliated with the council. For the Thompson scholarship, applicants write an essay on "What the American Labor Movement Has Meant to My Family."

Essex-West Hudson Labor Council – Labor Scholarship

The Essex-West Hudson Labor Council sponsors scholarships for children of members of unions affiliated with the council.

South Jersey Labor Council Peter J. McGuire Scholarship

The Peter J. McGuire Scholarship is awarded to any student that meets certain requirements.

The first Scholarships were presented in 1986 at the annual Labor Day Observance. At that time there were 8-$500.00 scholarships awarded.  The scholarships are now $1000.00, bringing the awards to date to over 530 scholarships totaling more than $390,000.

  • Have an affiliated union member in their immediate family
  • Show documented financial need
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.5 or higher
  • Live in Southern New Jersey
  • Attend one of the following institutions:

    • Camden County College: contact Associate Dean of Student Affairs at 856-227-7200
    • Gloucester County College: contact GCC Scholarship Committee at 856-415-2174
    • Rowan University: contact Dean of Students at 856-256-4102
    • Rutgers University: contact Financial Aid Office at 856-225-6039
