HPAE Local 5089 update on security at University Hospital
On Monday, February 5th, University Hospital invited representatives from HPAE, CWA, Teamsters, Operating Engineers, and CIR to a special meeting in an effort to maintain an open line of communication related to security. The concerns around security peaked last November with the assault of a HPAE member in a parking lot that lacked security presence. As a result, management expressed a commitment to improve security both internally and externally at the facility.
UH seemed eager to highlight the security improvements made over the past few months such as:
- an increase to the number of locations that are now monitored by securit
- an increase to the number of security guards on duty 24/7
- recent change of companies that manage the parking lots and garages.
In addition, Eve Borzon, (UH Chief Operating Officer), advised that members can request an escort during off-peak hours UPON ARRIVAL TO WORK by contacting security prior to exiting their car to avoid any delay. However, management was unable to provide the contact number to call to request this service – if you need to call them, please ask your department head for the number. Unfortunately, UH was unprepared to answer any follow-up questions or provide further details related to their claims despite the fact they requested the meeting.
As of yet, UH has not scheduled a follow-up meeting to continue this discussion or any other matter however we will continue to provide information as it develops. If you would like more information, please contact your local union rep.
In Solidarity,
Cynthia MacDougal
