12 HOUR SHIFTS FOR BHS
What To Know: The LEB has been in active talks with management about members requests for 12 hour shifts. In our last contract negotiations 12 hour shifts were discussed, in membership meetings 12 hours are still being requested. Everyone’s voice matters, 12 hour Sign- up sheets circulated and were handed in to management
Please note: We are working with management to address issues of members that don’t want 12 hour shifts however new employees being hired will be hired on 12 hour shift schedule
Benefits or 12 hour shifts:
- work-life balance: with more days off employees can have more time for family, errands , getaways , medical appointments just to mention a few.
- reduced stress, better/ improved focus. Having more days off can relieve stress and improve morale /longer rest periods can lead to improved focus and alertness efficiency due to more time to complete tasks
- schedule flexibility: allows nurses to choose which shifts to work(self- scheduling ) or to combine shifts for longer stretches of time off which also results in reduced absentseeim
- Continuity of patient care: with fewer handoffs due to fewer shift turnovers there are fewer opportunities for miscommunications and disruptions of patient care
As of right now, management has agreed to start implementation in January 2025, talks are still ongoing on the onboarding dates, units to be implemented 1st and we will notify everyone as soon as we know.
What is still needed: as you are all aware this is a huge change that is not easy but requires a lot of pieces to be put together.

Please make sure you have made your selections for which hours your prefer 8/12hrs Specify which shift: days 7a: please note evening deferential will still apply at 3pm /nights 7pm.
On 12 hr shifts you only required to work 3 weekend days meaning 1 Saturday and Sunday and then 1 other weekend day which can be a Saturday or Sunday.
