First-responders from communities near Jersey Shore University Medical Center had a special surprise for staff during Monday night’s shift change amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Police officers, firefighters and EMS workers pulled up to the Neptune City hospital with emergency lights flashing and clapped as doctors, nurses and other medical staff arrived for work – many of them to care for COVID-19 patients.

“Thank you, thank you,” the first-responders said as they applauded hospital staffers headed in for a grueling night’s work.

“No words can even begin to describe how our work has changed recently. Tonight our police/fire/ems community gathered to cheer us on and show us just how much they care,” Emily Wells, an emergency room nurse at the hospital wrote on Facebook.

“Tonight put smiles on our faces and some happy tears in our eyes,” she said.

Earlier on Monday, the hospital’s chief executive thanked the nurses, doctors, technicians, support staff and others for continuing to come to work.

“Your courageous dedication to our patients, community, and each other during this crisis continues to be amazing and, quite frankly, inspirational,” Vito Buccellato said in a statement. “Together we will get through this world-wide emergency and emerge stronger than ever.”
