CarePoint Health says 2,600 employees working in its hospitals may be laid off in December. These employees work at Bayonne Medical Center, Christ Hospital in Jersey City and Hoboken University Hospital.
As required, CarePoint Health sent out a 60-day notice that layoffs may be coming. According to CarePoint’s filing with the state, there could be as many as 859 staffers let go at Bayonne, 843 at Christ Hospital and 900 from Hoboken.
HPAE, the union representing these workers says it has been left in the dark. They’ve been hearing reports of layoffs, possibly bankruptcy or even a sale to Hudson Regional Hospital.
“Clearly this generates panic it generates panic in a community, among the workers,” says union President Debbie White.
White says CarePoint is contractually obligated to discuss any such layoffs.
“They have to inform the union and bargain with the union, but they seem very intent on being very vague about a plan,” says White.
HPAE represents 250 nurses at Christ Hospital and 700 employees at Bayonne Medical.
“Bayonne serves a community of almost 100,000 they need a free-standing acute care hospital,” says White. “CarePoint has not been forthright with us. They seem to operate in the shadows.”
CarePoint says that no decisions on layoffs or a potential closure have been made final.
“CarePoint Health remains committed to delivering best-in-class healthcare services to the people of Hudson County and the system is exploring various strategic financial restructuring options to support that vision,” a spokesperson stated.
CarePoint has been dealing with serious financial losses since becoming a non-profit system.
A main reason cited for financial shortfalls is that many patients they serve in Hudson County aren’t paying for service.
