HPAE Locals Reach Contract Settlements with BRMC, VNA

Two HPAE locals reached contract settlements this week. Local 5091, which represents RNs and non-nursing professionals at Bergen Regional Medical Center (BRMC), resolved the remaining issues with management to achieve an agreement for a 3 year contract. (Photo of the Local 5091 Negotiations Committee above) Nurses employed by the Visiting Nurses Association in Essex, Hudson, and Bergen counties settled their two contracts as well. The nurses are members of Local 5107.

In recent years our community hospitals have been disappearing, and in their place large corporate systems are emerging. Hospital revenues now also come not just from patient care, but from for-profit subsidiaries, investments, ambulatory surgical-centers, and income from hospital-controlled physician practices. Given this change, it’s essential that all of our hospitals be good corporate citizens and neighbors, and responsible stewards of our healthcare.

Inspira Nurses Call in Federal Mediator, Announce Plans for Picket

As a May 31st contract deadline nears, HPAE Locals 5131 and 5621, which represent 1,300 RNs at Inspira Health hospitals, have called in a federal mediator to the negotiations to help resolve the remaining contract issues. At the same, the Inspira RNs issued a 10-day notice to hospital management of their plan to hold an “informational picket” at all four Inspira Hospitals and at Inspira’s corporate offices on June 6, 2016.

Ford Motor Company security guards attack auto worker union organizers and supporters attempting to distribute literature outside the plant in Dearborn, Mich., in an event that was to become known as the “Battle of the Overpass.” The guards tried to destroy any photos showing the attack, but some survived—and inspired the Pulitzer committee to establish a prize for photography – May 26, 1937
