Star-Ledger Editorial Slams Meadowlands Hospital’s Birth Tourism Program

“For-profit hospitals like Meadowlands Hospital are like other businesses: They explore different revenue streams at every board meeting, they have to answer to shareholders, and they occasionally take a tacky detour from what many of us still believe is a mostly altruistic mission. But Meadowlands Hospital has crossed a line by taking an aggressive leap into the so-called birth tourism industry – the practice of soliciting pregnant Russian women to come to Secaucus to deliver their babies, which makes the newborns U.S. citizens…..”

HPAE, Other Groups in NJ for Healthcare Call on Legislative Leaders to Pass Out of Network Bill

A letter signed by 34 groups in NJ for Healthcare, including HPAE, was sent today to Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto and Senate President Stephen Sweeney. The groups call on both leaders to support the Out-of-Network Consumer Protection, Cost Containment, Transparency and Accountability Act (A1952/S1285) that has been stalled in the legislature. HPAE Chief of Staff Jeanne Otersen said “….we support this legislation to better inform patients and give them the information they need to avoid surprise medical bills while helping to provide needed savings in the State Health Benefits Plan.”
