Bargaining Begins at Hackensack Meridian Health

HPAE Local 5030 at Palisades Medical Center began contract negotiations with Hackensack Meridian Health on Monday for a successor contract. The current contract expires May 31st and the Local 5030 Negotiations Committee (photo above) is determined to negotiate a contract which improves staffing at the hospital, promotes wage equity, and ensures health insurance access and affordability.

AAC/Sunrise House Members Authorize Strike Notice

With an overwhelming “Yes” vote, HPAE Local 5629 members at AAC/Sunrise House, an inpatient drug and alcohol rehab facility in Lafayette, NJ have voted to authorize their Negotiations Committee to send management a 10 day strike notice, if necessary.  The Local 5629 Negotiations Committee has been bargaining with management for six months, and while some progress has been made, management has not seriously addressed all of the key issues: wages, staffing, holiday pay, and health and safety issues.

HPAE Joins Campaign to Improve Paid Family Leave Insurance

HPAE is joining with New Jersey Policy Perspective and other progressive groups to call for improvements to the current New Jersey Paid Family Leave insurance law. HPAE Policy Staff Jean Pierce noted that “in these uncertain economic times, as more of us struggle to keep our jobs and our homes, Paid Family Leave Insurance mean more to New Jersey’s families than ever before.”

HPAE Leaders Participate in International Meeting on Health Care

HPAE President Ann Twomey and HPAE Secretary-Treasurer Barbara Rosen attended a meeting organized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland from April 24 to April 28 to discuss strategies in the health sector that effectively address challenges and opportunities regarding employment and working conditions.

This Week in Labor History: Massive Rallies Mark “A Day Without Immigrants” in 2006

Rallies in cities across the U.S. for what organizers call “A Day Without Immigrants.” An estimated 100,000 immigrants and sympathizers gathered in San Jose, Calif., 200,000 in New York, 400,000 each in Chicago and Los Angeles. In all, there were demonstrations in at least 50 cities – May 1, 2006
