Support Grows for Illegally Locked-out Sunrise House Workers…And Other HPAE News

AFT President Randi Weingarten and Phil Murphy Support Sunrise House Workers

In a sign of growing support for their contract fight, Randi Weingarten, President of the 1.6 million member American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and Phil Murphy, candidate for NJ Governor, joined Local 5629 members at Sunrise House on Tuesday to show their support for the illegally locked-out workers, and to demand that management stop violating the labor law and negotiate a fair contract.

Cooper RNs Reach Tentative Agreement with Management

The Local 5118 Negotiations Committee reached a tentative agreement with Cooper University Hospital on Tuesday night. When bargaining began on Tuesday, both sides were far apart on many of the key issues. However, slowly throughout the day progress was made and a tentative agreement reached. Members will be voting on whether to ratify the contract next Monday, June 5, at the Hotel ML in Mount Laurel.



HPAE Locals @ HMH Demand a Fair Contract

With the Local 5030/Palisades contract with Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) expiring yesterday and negotiations for Local 5058/Jersey Shore Medical Center and Local 5138/Southern Ocean Medical Center with HMH set to begin shortly, the locals’ presidents and members went to HMH corporate headquarters demanding to talk to corporate executives about the need for a fair contract.

Retiree Medical Trust Participants Receive Statement of Benefits

Over 5,000 HPAE members are active participants in the HPAE Retiree Medical Trust. Participants recently received an Annual Participant Statement, which advises the participant of total contributions made on their behalf, the number of Years of Active Service that they have earned in the plan, their status, and their approximate monthly reimbursement benefit as of December 31, 2016.

HPAE has prepared an explanation of the statement for members, which also includes answers to frequently asked questions about plan benefits.

This Week in Labor History: California Law Gives Farmworkers Collective Bargaining Rights

Gov. Jerry Brown signs the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act, the first law in the U.S. giving farmworkers collective bargaining rights. The legislation came after years of effort by the United Farm Workers union, led by Cesar Chavez – June 4, 1975
