Statement of Ann Twomey, President On Appointment of Dr. Shereef Elnahal as Commissioner of Health

Governor-elect Phil Murphy announced his pick for Department of Health commissioner today,  Shereef Elnahal, M.D., M.B.A.  Dr. Elnahal has an impressive resume with the experience and background to make an effective Commissioner.  As New Jersey’s largest healthcare union, HPAE strives for a better and safer workplace for our workers, but also improved health outcomes and greater quality of life for all New Jersey residents.

During a time of large-scale hospital mergers, people living longer lives and desiring a healthy overall lifestyle the Commissioner of Health is one of the most important positions in Trenton. We look forward to working with our friends in the NJ Senate to ensure that the right questions are asked prior to confirmation of Mr. Elnahal.

We anticipate having an ally leading the Department of Health after these past eight years and hope that Dr. Elnahal and Governor-Elect Murphy have the same vision for the future of New Jersey’s healthcare workers and health of our State residents as we do at HPAE.
