Our Rights At Risk

The results of the Presidential and Congressional elections present challenges to each of us as union members and as members of the communities where we live and work. Regardless of how you voted, I ask you to consider that the election results threaten our union and workplace rights, women’s health, access to health care for tens of millions of Americans, and the constitutional rights of many of our neighbors, family members, friends and co-workers. While we work to restore civility to our political conversations, we also must work to protect and promote the workplace and civil rights that are the bedrock of our democracy and quality of life.

Most HPAE-Endorsed Candidates Win

While the outcome of the presidential election was not what our union wanted, there were some important electoral victories in New Jersey and around the country due to the work of HPAE and other union activists.

HPAE Wins Arbitration Case Against BRMC over Violation of Safety Rules

An arbitrator has ruled that Bergen Regional Medical Center (BRMC) violated HPAE Local 5091’s contract regarding workplace safety and ordered the hospital to compensate an RN for severe injuries that she suffered following an assault two years ago. The arbitrator ordered BRMC to pay the RN for all necessary medical and other expenses not covered by workers’ compensation and back pay.

This Week in U.S. Labor History: Civil Works Admin. Creates Jobs During the Depression

President Franklin D. Roosevelt announces plans for the Civil Works Administration to create four million additional jobs for the Depression-era unemployed. The workers ultimately laid 12 million feet of sewer pipe and built or made substantial improvements to 255,000 miles of roads, 40,000 schools, 3,700 playgrounds, and nearly 1,000 airports (not to mention 250,000 outhouses still badly needed in rural America) – November 8, 1933
