Support the “Out of Network” Consumer Protection Bill
HPAE and its coalition partners in NJ For Healthcare are urging support for S-1285, a bill which will rein in excessive charges for all of New Jersey’s privately insured health plans, by establishing arbitration and a cap on out-of-network rates, as well as protect consumers from surprise, out of network charges. We are asking HPAE members to call the legislators on the Senate Budget Committee and urge them to vote “YES” to send S1285 to the Senate Floor for a vote.

SEC Appoints Two Trustees to the HPAE Retiree Medical Trust
At their meeting last week, the HPAE State Executive Council appointed two union trustees to the HPAE Retiree Medical Trust for 2017: HPAE Staff Rep Mike Slott and Local 5118 Vice President Jackie Franchetti. The Retiree Medical Trust, which was established ten years ago, provides reimbursement of medical expenses to HPAE retirees.
Quarterly Pension Payments Bill Sent to Governor Christie
The New Jersey legislature is taking steps to shore up the state pension system, approving a bill that would require the state to make quarterly, rather than annual pension payments. The bill (S-2810/A-4) passed both the state Senate and Assembly unanimously and has been sent to the governor’s desk for approval.
