AAC/Sunrise House Faces Complaints Over Worker Rights, Safety Violations

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has found merit to union complaints that AAC/Sunrise House unlawfully changed policies and procedures and granted monetary benefits without negotiating with HPAE. In the meantime, in response to several recent incidents of violence at Sunrise House, HPAE filed a complaint with the Office of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the federal agency charged with the enforcement of safety and health in workplaces.

New Interim Consultant Approved to Manage BRMC

On Thursday, December 8, the Bergen County Improvement Authority (BCIA) approved a contract with a new consultant who would manage Bergen Retional Medical Center (BRMC) after March 15, 2017 — if there is a need to have an interim manager. The County now acknowledges that it is unlikely to complete negotiations with one of the six bidders to manage the hospital in time for them to take over in barely three months. HPAE represents a total of 500 RNs and Professional Staff at the hospital.

This Week in U.S. Labor History: The Failure of the National Civic Federation

The National Civic Federation is formed by business and labor leaders, most prominently AFL president Sam Gompers, as a vehicle to resolve conflicts between management and labor. Not all unionists agreed with the alliance. The group turned increasingly conservative and labor withdrew after Gompers’ 1924 death – December 16, 1900
