President Twomey Named to Politicker NJ 2016 Power List

HPAE President Ann Twomey has once again been named to the annual Politicker NJ Power List. The online journal’s description of Ann’s contribution: “Founder and President of Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) Twomey embodies gravitas as the pioneering union leader who grew her outfit from a round table of small bore outrage in the 1970s to its current 11,000-strong.” (Actually, we have 13,000 members)

More Patients Feel Pain of Surprise Billing Even After Going ‘In-Network’

Patients with health insurance often assume most of their medical costs will be covered when they visit the emergency room at a hospital that is part of their coverage network. But new national research shows that at least one in five of these patients were still treated by an out-of-network physician, despite seeking treatment at an in-network facility. And these visits resulted in surprise medical bills that averaged more than $600 — but could cost consumers as much as $19,600 extra.

JFK Medical Center to Merge with Hackensack Meridian

One of the largest and fasting growing hospital networks in New Jersey, Hackensack Meridian Health, has reached an agreement to acquire JFK Medical Center in Edison, the CEOs at both institutions announced last week. HPAE represents over 2,500 health care workers at Hackensack Meridian Health.
