HPAE Inspira Member Update: ICUs at Elmer and Mannington

We are writing to regretfully inform you that Inspira has decided to close the Intensive Care Units at the Mannington and Elmer facilities. This is a layoff of approximately 15 RN positions at Mannington and approximately 12 at Elmer.

The decision was made solely by Inspira without the union’s input. Our role is to enforce our contractual rights and negotiate additional provisions as needed and where appropriate to reduce any negative impact this may have on our members throughout the Inspira system.

Our union contracts contain clear language outlining members’ rights during layoffs and reorganizations, including recall, seniority, and severance provisions. The contracts exist to protect all of us. Inspira has advised us that they fully intend to comply with contract language and the National Labor Relations Act throughout this process.

In keeping with our rights under the contract, Local leaders and union staff will be meeting with Inspira management to negotiate over the effects of the layoff on Wednesday, June 17th at 9am. A request for information has already been filed. We are actively working on developing proposals.

We will keep you all posted as this situation evolves. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us or to our Staff Representative, Anna, with any questions. We know many of you will be wondering what this means for the future of these two hospitals; Inspira has advised us that there are no plans to fully close Elmer or Mannington.

In solidarity,
Caroline Sands, President, Local 5131
Christa Saracino, President, Local 5142
