Local 5094 Rutgers UBHC Labor/Management Meeting Update

On April 30, HPAE union representatives attended a meeting with Rutgers upper management and Labor Relations personnel to discuss the working conditions at UBHC. What exactly is Labor Relations and what do they do?

Rutgers University Labor Relations is a department meant to foster working relationships between unions and management. Labor management meetings, like the one held in April, are one of the many ways this is accomplished. Ideally, these meetings resolve labor disputes and issues in the workplace before grievances occur.

What happened at our Labor Relations meeting?

It started off by management expressing they thought this meeting was about time off requests only, despite the fact we sent them an entire agenda which nobody reviewed ahead of time.

A member of Labor Relations did not know what an RVU was.

How are people who don’t understand our work or the pressure we’re under, holding us accountable?

After presenting our agenda in its entirety, we were put in a caucus (a separate waiting room). Someone from labor relations came to us just a couple minutes before the meeting ended and told us they would have to get back to us on everything they didn’t have a direct response for.

We are still waiting to hear back and it has been over a month now since this meeting. Don’t worry, this is not the last of us that they will hear. We will be following up- and continuing to fight for what we deserve.
