Local 5185 Union Raises – June 2026
Please read this entire union update. It contains important information on union issues, safe staffing, benefits, and raises.
“UNILATERAL IMPLEMENTATION”
Unilateral Implementation is when management makes a major change in wages, hours, benefits, or conditions of employment without negotiation with our union. This is a violation of the Law.
An important part of being in a union is having a say at work. If you believe Management is making any unilateral changes, report it immediately. Union Members in several departments have been able to stop or negotiate away negative changes management has tried to force on us.
SAFE STAFFING:
Last year, Union members at Bayonne Hospital won some of the most comprehensive Staffing Agreements in the Country (Appendix K). These protections were hard-fought, but they only mean anything if we enforce them.
If you believe your unit is short-staffed, you and your coworkers should fill out a Short Staffing Form and give a copy to your supervisor and put a copy in the union box. This protects you from legal liability, puts management on notice, and gives your union leaders proof when arguing Staffing issues.
Our union has filed a grievance over Staffing in all departments. Our last Staffing Grievance resulted in staffing bonuses and bonus contracts to help fill severely short departments, and we hope to continue to make progress.
BONUSES:
Article 13 of our CBA allows management to offer a bonus of $10/hour extra for Professionals, Techs, Service Workers, and Clerical workers to fill extra shifts. Unfortunately, this bonus is not automatic. We are asking all members to demand extra money for extra work. If your manager asks you to fill a shift above your weekly commitment, demand the bonus! When you put your name in the Availability Book, write “Bonus Only”.
SOLIDARITY WITH HRH-SECAUCUS:
Our HPAE Brothers and sisters at Secaucus University Hospital are getting ready to re-negotiate their Collective Bargaining Agreement, which expires on New Year’s Eve. We will do everything we can to support them, because we’re stronger together (and what they win this year, we can win in 2028)!
UNION RAISES:
Negotiated Raises will go into effect the First Full pay period of June (June 7-26).
This means people will see their new rate in their check for that kay period.
Everyone will move to the “2026” column, then will move 2 steps down on the wage tables in Appendices A-F, UNLESS 1 step puts you on your correct step, then you’ll move 1 step.
Everyone above the top step will get a 3% raise.
The goal is to get everyone on or close to their correct step by the end of the contract.
Because this is complex, we’re getting payroll information from management to verify it’s done right.
ADP Registration:
Management is switching the payroll system to ADP. You should have received an email to start your registration from a do-not-reply address. If you did not, please address it with HR Immediate.
You will need to create your sign-in with Carmen in HR weekdays 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM or in Nursing Administration 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM or 1:00 AM – 2:00 AM daily.
