Local 5142 Bargaining Update, May 28

To date, we have had six bargaining sessions with management. The following does not represent all proposals on each side. These are preliminary, but represent a priority to address with you at present.
Today we reached a Tentative Agreement for a new contract with the hospital. The membership meetings to VOTE on our new contract is June 3 at 8:30, 1:00, 5:30 and 8pm.
At 4:24PM the hospital emailed their “Time Limited, Last, Best and Final Offer”. We will inform you and discuss at Thursday’s meeting.
We were able to come to an agreement on a few minor issues but the hospital negotiation team made it clear that they are “Not Interested” in any of our major issues such as staffing, education, wages and vacation.

Today, we met with EHMC negotiation team at 11:17AM. We gave EHMC two (2) revised proposals. HPAE attempted to engage the hospital’s negotiation team in discussions about staffing and education.
Healthcare workers at Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen and the Harborage, a long-term care facility at the Palisades campus voted to authorize concerted job action if Hackensack Meridian continues to stall during negotiations.
Adam Witt, a union leader and nurse at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, was fired in April 2020. He is fighting to get his job back. The flyers were posted at the hospital’s security stations, warning guards to
HPAE still recommends masking indoors and social distancing as necessary measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 and its variants. We want to ensure that we continue the downward trending of numbers of new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Today we pressed the hospital to address several major issues: vacation, education, staffing, and wages. EHMC has no real response to these issues. They continue to tell us they will “get back to us.”
