Inspira RNs Are Fighting for Safe Staffing

With two weeks left before their contracts expire, nurses from HPAE Locals 5131 and 5621 met on Tuesday with representatives from other unions and elected leaders at a community breakfast to discuss crucial staffing and patient care issues that nurses are advocating for in the current contract negotiations with Inspira.

Tedesco Calls for Action to Stop Violence at BRMC

In response to a report published in The Record on Sunday, Bergen County Executive James Tedesco called yesteday for sweeping action to stem the violence at Bergen Regional Medical Center. HPAE President Ann Twomey praised Tedesco’s stance: “After many years of raising concerns about patient and worker safety at Bergen Regional Medical Center with government officials, it is refreshing to hear the Bergen County executive announce an intervention to restore a safe patient and working environment.”

Support the Striking Verizon Workers

As the Verizon strike moves into its 6th week, striking workers represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) need our solidarity and support. The unions have established a joint Solidarity Fund, and we urge HPAE members to contribute to the fund.

HPAE State Executive Council Endorses Clinton

The HPAE State Executive Council voted yesterday to endorse Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for President. New Jersey will hold a Presidential primary on June 7th.

HPAE Testifies in Favor of $15 Minimum Wage

HPAE Public Policy Director Bridget Devane testified on Monday to the State Senate Committee on Labor in support of S-15, a bill that would raise the minimum wage in New Jersey to $15/hour over five years.  Bridget pointed out that “jobs in healthcare can provide an entry into the middle class with benefits, but not for everyone. While many in healthcare make more than $15 an hour, there are many who make less, even after years of caring for our elderly and ill.”

Minneapolis general strike backs Teamsters, who are striking most of the city’s trucking companies. This was one of three general strikes in the U.S. in 1934, during the height of the Great Depression; the other two were in Toledo, OH, and San Francisco, CA – May 16, 1934
