In Memory of Donna Benjamin, RN & HPAE Leader
HPAE has lost one of its most dedicated and inspirational leaders, Donna Benjamin. Donna played a key role in organizing RNs and other healthcare workers at Bayonne Hospital (now Bayonne Medical Center). She was Local 5185’s first President and served in that office for many years, until she stepped down. Donna continued to be active in HPAE’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) and as a Vice President of the Hudson County CLC.
HPAE @ the AFT Convention
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the national union to which HPAE is affiliated, held its biannual convention in Minneapolis, MN this week. The convention delegates reaffirmed AFT’s support Hillary Clinton for President and passed convention resolutions on key issues facing HPAE members, including reigning in abusive medical billing practices and petitioning OSHA to promulgate standards for workplace violence prevention.
Charity Care Cuts Hurt All Hospitals
During Trenton’s annual budgeting process, instead of sticking with the proposed plan for Charity Care funding, Governor Christie decided to redirect 82 percent of the Charity Care funding pool to only 12 New Jersey hospitals. This leaves 59 hospitals with only 17 percent of the funding to help care for the uninsured, even though these 59 hospitals care for roughly half of all Charity Care patients in the state.
