Horizon Blue Cross – Breach of Member Records
We’ve received word today from the NJ Division of Pension and Benefits about a security breach at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey that affects the personal data of some members enrolled in NJ’s State Health Benefits Plan.
From Kierney Corliss,NJ Division of Pension and Benefits:
“On the weekend of November 1-3, 2 laptops were stolen from Horizon’s headquarters in Newark. The laptops held records of approximately 10,000 SHBP/SEHBP members (other Horizon members were also impacted). The files were password protected but some of them contained Horizon ID numbers, Social Security Numbers and other personal information. Horizon is issuing a press release today at 2:00 announcing the breach. There is a hotline for members, 877-237-9502, which is available Monday thru Friday 9:00 am to 7:00 PM EST or they can go to the Horizon website. Horizon is sending letters (see attached) to members impacted by the breach in waves over the next week. Members whose SS# were on the file will be offered credit monitoring services for one year.”
