Nominations for Local 5089 Officer positions were closed on October 31, 2025. In accordance with the HPAE election rules, all unopposed candidates shall be deemed elected.
As we mentioned in last week’s message, Governor Murphy and the NJ state legislature chose to include in the state budget a savings of $200M over two years that would be achieved by increasing your health insurance costs.
Please be advised that nominations are now open for all officer positions of Local 5089. Only members in good standing may nominate or be nominated. This election will take place by secret mail ballot.
HPAE congratulates Carole Johnson on her appointment as the next President and Chief-Executive-Officer of University Hospital in Newark.
At a time when our public institutions are under attack by the federal government, it is more important than ever that the State of New Jersey step up to fill these gaps.
University Hospital, New Jersey’s only public acute-care hospital, needs a strong and vocal champion, advocates say, especially given ongoing reconstruction at its Newark campus and the potential for massive federal funding cuts to health care programs.

Recently one of our nurses was assaulted at work by a patient and ended up in the ICU. This is not surprising to many of us, but it is an escalation and a tipping point. We have had enough.
