After more than a full year of intense negotiations, the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) Local 5089, which represents more than 900 Registered Nurses at University Hospital, reached a tentative agreement with the Newark hospital.
HPAE Local 5089 members will vote on the tentative agreement on Dec. 10 and Dec. 11.
“This is a step towards ensuring University Hospital patients receive the quality care they deserve,” said HPAE Local 5089 President Cynthia McGougall in a statement. “We are proud of our union’s dedication during this fight to protect our members and, in turn, the patients we care for.
“Our nurses are best in class and deserve this new contract. While there is still work to be done to ensure that University Hospital remains committed to meeting patient and community demands, this is a positive step,” McGougall said.
“We are proud of this contract and look forward to working with University Hospital President Shereef Elnahal on other upcoming priorities,” said HPAE President Debbie White.
HPAE is the largest union of registered nurses and health care professionals in New Jersey. Since its founding by Englewood Hospital nurses in 1974, HPAE has expanded across the state and into Southeastern Pennsylvania representing 13,000 nurses, social workers, therapists, technicians, medical researchers and other health care professionals in hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, blood banks and university research facilities. HPAE is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.
