University Hospital Local 5094 Contract Negotiations Update – August 5, 2024

We met with University Hospital on August 5, 2024, for our second negotiation session. We presented the Hospital with our financial and wage proposals in today’s session.

It’s time for University Hospital to STEP UP!

We informed Hospital management that movement on steps was rated one of the highest priorities for our members. We proposed 4 step movements in addition to across the board increases for all negotiations unit employees. Our negotiations unit has been fighting back against inequity in the step placements and it is time to correct that problem moving forward. The Hospital presented their own wage proposal that would eliminate our step system and replace it with a min/mid/max scale that would give the Hospital full control over placement of our negotiations unit employees for salary and wages. We informed them today that removing the scale does not resolve the issue. We will continue to be vigilant in pushing for step movements in this contract cycle.

We had a dialogue regarding the side letter on Non-hostile work. Our committee stated this should be memorialized in the body of the contract  to protect our negotiations unit from hostility and unfair treatment on the job. The Hospital rejected this proposal and countered to eliminate the language from the contract entirely. We came back and sharply stated that this was unacceptable and questioned the Hospital’s intent to protect its employees from a hostile work environment.

Our committee proposed and strongly defended the need for Juneteenth to be an official additional holiday. The Hospital is suggested that Juneteenth simply replace another holiday or take the place of one of your float holidays. We informed them that was unacceptable. We continue to negotiate over this issue.

We have come to an agreement on several non-economic items, bringing us closer to a final agreement early on in these negotiations. For those working nights, you will be paid for the night before or the night after jury duty. We updated our job series with additional positions to increase layoff security.  We changed language to protect our negotiations unit employees privacy.

Our next session is scheduled for August 12th.
