Community Oversight Board to address proposed closure of Pediatric unit at University Hospital
Community members and labor unions will attend a meeting of the Community Oversight Board (COB) at University Hospital during which the COB will be reviewing the hospital’s plans to close its pediatric unit. A Certificate of Need application was filed with the Department of Health by University Hospital on April 2, 2018 and is currently under review.
In accordance with the 2013 New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act and its by-laws, the COB shall review all plans that could or are intended to make substantive changes that will result in the diminution, deterioration or reduction to essential health care services currently provided by the Hospital to the community of the City of Newark.

HPAE along with a coalition of labor unions and community activists will be on hand to raise concerns over the loss of pediatric services at the hospital, which is New Jersey’s only public Level 1 Trauma Center serving the residents of Newark and a safety net hospital for the entire state of NJ.
